I have been curious about the Faroe Islands ever since Jerry and I flew over them in 2005. Talk about a trip! (Jerry piloted us to France and back via the North Atlantic in our single engine plane! )

I was intrigued because the Faroes had this mysterious government: it was Danish, but not really. The islands were geographically isolated from the world. What went on there?
When I saw the itinerary for this trip included the Faroes I was all in. Luckily Charlotte was too.
We spent our first day in Torshavn, the capitol of the Faroe Islands. The Faroes have had their own flag since 1940 and home tule within the Danish kingdom since 1948. It is an archipelago of 18 islands.

We spent the next day on the island of Esturoy in the town of Funningur.

Then we took a tour of the village led by town members in traditional dress speaking in Faroese. (I’m sure they all speak English as well.
The church was lovely.

They served us lunch (delicious fish soup and pancakes ) at the school house.

Of course there was time for some shopping.
I had a dog sighting!

Before we boarded our ship we met at the community hall for pictures.

We went inside and stumbled our way through a line dance.
Then we went back to the church to sing a few hymns along with our hosts before departing to Iceland.
I’ve finally scratched my Faroe Islands itch. I had a delightful time. But it still has an air of mystery . . .
Best.
Mary
PS. At dinner that night I heard about the tunnel/bridge system in the Faroes. This is the first underwater roundabout. Check it out!
