At Sea, But In A Good Way

We left Tromso at 7 in the evening and woke up the next morning in Hellmobotn Bay at the southern end of Tysfjorden. Because we were above the Arctic Circle the sun never set. (Good thing our windows are covered in blackout curtains.)

The next day after lunch we spent the afternoon in Reine on the Lofoten archipelago. Reine is a quirky tourist town now, but at their visitor center we learned how difficult it was to survive in the fishing industry one hundred years ago.

A bit of whimsy

Boats everywhere

After we got back to the ship and finished dinner the captain announced that a school of pilot whales were off our bow.

(I borrowed from others to get these pics, by the way). We had at least a hundred whales. It was such fun to watch them cavorting, traveling in packs of 2’s and 3’s like teenagers. They hung around our ship for about an hour, giving us all a show.

I felt giddy with delight at my good fortune.

Best.

Mary

Mary! Your photos ( and those you borrowed) are fantastic!

I’m seriously considering NatGeo for our next choice of travel tours.

  9. Try to charm the captain into sailing south towards France, so we get a chance to see you
